(More) Amy's Ramblings

Mechanical engineer, sports follower, gamer, lover of the offbeat, music nut, linuxchick, writer, and social geek.

Currently, I seem to be addicted to Old Hollywood (including Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Cary Grant, etc, etc) so you'll be seeing a lot of pictures/videos/quotes related to that. Also addicted to video games, Sherlock Holmes (Brett!Holmes and Cumberbatch!Holmes), fanfiction, pretty pictures of anything, and music. Also geekiness. Lots of geekiness. Enjoy what you find.

I've recently started contributing to Gene Kelly Fans, created by the incredibly awesome Kelli Marshall.

    Let's get social!

    Tips.

Tips for unfucking some stuff.  I figured I should write them down so others can benefit from what I’ve experimented with and found out.

    • Garbage cans.  They hold your garbage and trash.  They can get nasty.  If they’re small enough and made of plastic, they usually can go in the dishwasher.  Rubbermaid ones can totally go in the dishwasher.  They come out looking completely like new too!  I found this out after moving and noticing that my garbage cans were nasty as shit. I was thinking of buying new ones but figured I could try to wash them first.  It worked!
    • Toothbrush holder and retainer/dentures bath thingy.  (Please do not judge; I wear retainers at night so my teeth do not move back into their pre-braces configuration.)  These both can go in the dishwasher as well.  Including the retainer box.  If this is all plastic (or even ceramic) it should be able to go in the dishwasher.
    • Empty your vacuum after you’re done with it.  I have a Shark upright (let me tell you, it’s the most amazing vacuum I’ve used.  Legit.) and it says in the instructions to empty it regularly.  I do it right after I’m done.  It’s a bagless machine, but if you use bags in yours check the bag every so often (monthly?) to see how full it is.  I think that’s a problem… even if people are cleaning regularly, the place isn’t getting any cleaner because the bag in their vacuum is full.
    • Denture tablets can be used to clean a toothbrush.  Like if you get a cold right after you change your toothbrush and don’t want to throw it out (yes, you should change your toothbrush after getting sick so you don’t re-infect yourself), you can soak it in a denture tablet solution.  That should kill the germs and leave a minty taste behind.  Mouthwash can be used as well.

Also, keeping your cleaning stuff together in one cabinet works well (for me, anyway) because it’s all in one spot so you don’t have to run around the place looking for things.  The only thing that’s in a different place are the paper towels because I use them in the kitchen.
